"Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." ~ Hippocrates

According to Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, author of Food as Medicine and President & Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Foundation, the kiwi fruit is one of the most underrated healing foods in the world. In a study conducted at Rutgers where the nutritional value of 27 fruits were compared ounce for ounce to determine which provided the most nutrition, the kiwi fruit was found to be the most nutrient dense.

The kiwi fruit has twice as much vitamin C than oranges, contains a significant source of magnesium, and outranks bananas and apricots in potassium.

With February being Heart Health month, it is interesting to note that in a research study at the University of Oslo in Norway it was discovered that the kiwi fruit has been shown to promote heart health by working as a natural blood thinner. It was noted that kiwi could thin blood without any of the risk factors associated with aspirin such as stomach pain, bruising or bleeding.

When perusing the produce section, also keep in mind that the Environmental Working Group put kiwi fruit on its list of twelve foods least contaminated with pesticides.
